The well known domain registrar RegisterFly will lose its accreditation if it can not fix their serious operational problems in the next 10 days. ICANN informed RegisterFly that they are in serious trouble and if they are not fixing the problems, they will loose its operating agreement. Customers are complaining for months now and the registrar’s operations have descended into chaos this week. The former president and CEO misused company funds.
As the company’s principals battle one another, thousands of domain names have been caught in the crossfire. RegisterFly says that at least 75,000 customer domains expired as a direct result of the company’s financial and management problems. RegisterFly is also an SSL certificate authority, making its stability an issue for about 460 site owners who are currently securing sites with FlySSL certificates.
A lawsuit filed by RegisterFly’s parent company, Unified Names, blames the meltdown on misuse of company funds by President and CEO Kevin Medina, who was fired by the company’s board. The suit alleges that Medina spent company funds on liposuction surgery and escort services, this is hilarious. “After his termination, Mr. Medina deleted email accounts, access to support tools, and access for our risk/billing department to issue refunds,” RegisterFly’s Glenn Stansbury said in a statement posted at RegisterFlies, a customer protest site. RegisterFly is also reported to have changed the root password of its web server to prevent sabotage.
Complicating the situation is the fact that RegisterFly is an ICANN-accredited registrar, but has registered the majority of its domains as a reseller for eNom, which is owned by Demand Media.
The problems date to end February 2006, when ICANN registrar liaison Tim Cole informed eNom of allegations that RegisterFly had altered customers’ WHOIS contact data, replacing it with “intentionally inaccurate data,” and that this action could constitute a potential breach of eNom’s own accreditation agreement. “At this time, ICANN confirmed with eNom that any registered names sponsored through eNom’s accreditation - even if processed through RegisterFly as a reseller - are eNom’s responsibility,” the ICANN letter notes.
That will be good news to the hundreds of thousands of customers who bought those resold domains. The fate of the approximately 880,000 domains issued by RegisterFly under its own accreditation is less clear. New president and CEO John Naruszewicz, who co-founded the company with Medina, says he is trying to rebuild the company’s customer service operation and get the web site working again. Late Thursday, some domain owners were reporting that they were able to successfully log in and manage their domains.

That’s some serious stuff. I’m sure some people had some prime domain names and lost them because of it.
I’ve personally never used RegisterFly. I’ve always stuck with GoDaddy.
March 3rd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
One March 20th I’ll lose my domain because of RegisterFly’s inability to process my renewal. I’ve seen where some people went directly through ENOM to renew their domain, but $29.95 is a bit much for my domain.
It’s a vanity domain name, and my vanity only runs so deep.

“I’ve personally never used RegisterFly. I’ve always stuck with GoDaddy.”
Oh dear, better the devil you know, right?
March 3rd, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Ouch. I just renewed my domain with them a few weeks ago, and it went through fine. However, one of the people I help run a website for renewed her domain a few days ago and it never went through. Now I’m left to try to pick up the pieces.
March 3rd, 2007 at 6:37 pm
Gregg, me too. GoDaddy has been very kind to me. I moved all of my existing domains there sometime back. Very happy with their service.

I had my domain expire back in November because their system botched both of my renewal requests. Then it failed to pass on my transfer request when I got fed up with them. On top of that, their stellar customer support (sarcasm) was about as unfriendly and unhelpful as could be, telling me to call back tomorrow and it should clear. That lasted a week before demanding a refund and getting a new domain. If I had been running a business off of that I would have been hurting…

Lose is spelt ‘lose’ not ‘loose’.
March 3rd, 2007 at 7:23 pm
GoDaddy probably has money, but has the worst policies and customer service. They have repeatedly cancelled domains hosted on other services because someone complained about the content. Such customers get no warning and have to pay a “restitution abuse fee” to get the domains back that they paid for. This is like the phone company cancelling your phone because someone complained about your political affiliation.
Boycott GoDaddy and use a more open-minded and less overpriced registrar that respects customers rights to free speech.
March 3rd, 2007 at 7:30 pm
I’m bitterly amused to read this article. Registerfly was my registrar until January. I started having trouble renewing domain names in November and “customer service” wasn’t responding to trouble tickets, so I moved all 12 of my domains to Go Daddy. Even that took over a month because Registerfly’s messed up system wouldn’t allow me to update my contact information until I finally mentioned lawyers and then they did it manually for me. I’m not surprised to see them going down in flames now.
March 3rd, 2007 at 7:54 pm
If you have valuable domains don’t trust GoDaddy!
Use Enom or Moniker!
March 3rd, 2007 at 8:56 pm
[…] So, it was with bitter glee that I read this post at King Nomar Dot Com that Registerfly is in danger of losing their ICANN accreditation in 10 days if they don’t get their act together and resolve their internal and customer support issues. Unfortunately, this action comes too late to help many of Registerfly’s 75,000+ victims customers, who’ve already lost their domains or are on the verge of doing so. […]

I can’t vouch for GoDaddy’s hosting plans, but as a registrar they are top notch.

I’ve always had good success with 1and1. I think the bottom line is; you want to go with a company that has a well established record of success and stability.
The only way I’d go with a lesser known company like RegisterFly on this kind of thing is if I knew the people running the company.
March 4th, 2007 at 12:00 am
Wow, this is really interesting. I guess we should all stick to GoDady - they got millions + they pay for the Superbowl commercials so I guess they can afford the liposuction too if needed without screwing up our domains hehehe

Hmm something doesn’t add up here. If the former CEO caused all that chaos AFTER he was let go they obviously have a lot more “cleanup” to do as it’s SOP to remove all accounts before something like that can happen.
That tells me they are clueless about IT in general … which is not saying much for an IT based company/service. If I were a current customer I’d transfer your domains now .. before you can’t. If you’ve ever had to go through proof of ownership on domains you won’t want to again
March 4th, 2007 at 3:45 am
Good story, although i feel really sorry for the people who had their domains expire i only hope registerfly or ICANN will let the owners of the domains effected, get their domain out of the ‘redemption period’ without the normal and very expensive associated cost.
March 4th, 2007 at 4:05 am

The entire domain name system is flawed,
and needs to be redesigned from the ground
up. It has become as altruistic as a pyramid
scheme, where registrars are pulling all kinds
of stunts to force domain holders to pay more,
and other issues. It is that part of the internet
where used car salesmen have upgraded to domain sales and mismanagement specialists, and the public
and businesses are suffering.
ICAAN and Verisign and the like are to blame for
implementing a very bad system for outsourcing domain sales which is resulting in a domain name meltdown, wherein we can expect to hear more such stories as this as time wraps up.
My advice, if you are having domain name troubles,
ignore them. It is not worth the cost to your health to be troubled by such vexations.

Now Registerfly’s site is down. Have they finally gone under? I managed to transfer 9 of 12 domains to enom. However, 3 could not be transfer because they showed Registerfly as the owner under their ” fly Whois protection”. How ironic. Now I seem to have lost a domain, even though I paid TWICE to renew; the money was taken, but the renewal kept failing. When I finally got through to customer support on 3/2, I was told they were having server problems and their techs were working on it and everything should be up within a week. A WEEK?? I was told all I could do was wait because they could not get into our accounts. Was that just a load of crap while they took the money and ran? Anyone have a current customer service number? 973-736-2545 has been disconnected.

March 6th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Heard that before. Hope there’s a shred of truth.
I just spoke with Enom. They also believe it’s just a temporary tech problem. They have not heard anything about Registerfly going out of business yet…
Thanks for the phone number.

Well, i have about 10 domains with them and they are due to expire next month.. so im pretty nervous right now. Although I tested a transfer for one of the domains and it went through so I have hope, the only problem I got is that 3 of my domains have ProtectionFly on it and cannot be removed, I hope they fix that soon so I can transfer everything and be done with it.

I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.
This is where you’re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.
Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit - I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.
