Why spend your time submitting your website to directories if it seems like nobody uses them anymore? Web directories are very useful to attract visitors to your website. Web directories have been around since the beginning of the internet. Yahoo! Began on the internet as a web directory, it was one of the biggest and best organized web directories at the time (at this moment they still are one of the biggest and best organized).
Directories rely on websites submitted to them. Then a team of the directory is looking at the site to approve it or decline it. If it is a site with a good quality and relevance the team will most likely approve the site.
Because humans check the relevancy and informational “worth” of a site before adding it to the directory, search engines can rely on this process being carried out for them and that the sites have been described correctly. The directories were your website is accepted are providing a link to your site. If you submit your site to alot of directories it will improve your SERPs in the search engines.
Link populariy is a very big part of SEO. Using web directories is a great way to build more links and increase your site’s SERPs. People will not use web directories alot but spiders are. Spiders will still regularly index them and the links they contain. This is why submitting your site to web directories is still very usefull.
DMOZ is one of the best known and biggest directories on the web. DMOZ has been online for years now and lists over 4 million sites. Alot of other directories and even Google are taking content from the ODP (DMOZ). This means that if your site is listed in DMOZ, your site will get alot more inbound links and your link popularity will grow fast. If you get listed DMOZ, you can consider your site of high quality and relevance.
If you are submitting your site to directories, your description is very important. You have to describe your site and what it is all about. It is not advertising space. You don’t have to sell anything. Just describe what your site is all about and you will get accepted faster.
Submitting your site to web directories is one of the easiest ways to increase your link popularity. It might not give you that much traffic. But it will help your search engine rankings. And that will give you lots of traffic.

Haha Nomar, there’s no need to be ’shy’. .
March 6th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
Well, I submitted my blog and restaurantselector.com to your directory Nomar
However, I agree completely with this though. Web Directories are very important. I myself have used one at least once to find a site that was relevant to a topic I was looking for.
DMOZ hasn’t accepted any of my sites
Anyone here have a site listed on DMOZ?

Don’t the search engines realize whats going on here and reduce the link importance of directories?

You’re right. Great source of back links for improving PR. Check out vilesilencer’s list.

Final Fantasy 7,
As far as I can tell, no. Directories can get high Page Ranks and generally not banned by Search Engines.

I’ve read that submitting to directories can be hurtful because the links are poor quality…what should i do!?
March 7th, 2007 at 6:46 am
@ Gregg I guess it depends on where you submit to. Not really true on the poor quality part. In fact with the higher PR directories, you would only gain, not lose out.
March 7th, 2007 at 7:56 am
You can get into the sandbox if you submit to 1000 directories when you just start. But normally, its not hurtful

Directories are meant to compile lists of websites for easy reference, anyway. It is like listing your business up for others to refer to.

Yahoo is a very expensive directory at $299.00/year
and for some reason I don’t think that DMOZ gets updated much anymore.
Having your website listed in directories is a good way for people to find you.
March 8th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
I agree on Yahoo. It is very expensive !! I am not submitting to yahoo (yet)
