One of the biggest design obstacles to make your site search engine friendly are graphics. Everybody likes the graphics on websites and it is nice to see a original designed website. You often hear the sentence: “One picture is worth a thousand words”. This is difinitely true, but not for search engines. For search engines we can say: “One keyword is worth at least a thousand pictures”.

Web crawlers cannot read images on websites that don’t have the “ALT” tag. Some search engines cannot even read images with the “ALT” tag. Images should always be next to your content (if possible). If you place your images in front of your content, it will take up valuable text space in the first paragraph. Search engine crawlers are reading your site from the left (top) to the right (bottom).

You should remember this rule and take it with you when you are designing a website. Ofcourse your site can have a great design with great pictures. But keep the search engine optimization in mind. This will definitely help your search engine rankings.
