There are more than 100 factors that search engines uses to rank a page into their search results (SERPs). Every webmaster wants to rank high with their sites, but there is a lot of competition on the web and you have to stand out. Publish fresh quality content is a major factor for high rankings. You also need to search engine optimize your site. This article contains 10 most important search engine ranking factors that can influence your rankings at the main search engines.
1. Title Tag:
It is denoted by the <title> tags in HTML. This tag always shows at the top of a browser window. Most of the time it will also appear in the SERPs as the title of the web page. A good title tag is critical for good rankings.
2. Anchor Text:
If many sites link to your site with a anchor text that is on-topic for a article on your site, that article will have a better change of ranking high for the query. This will improve your organic traffic.
3. Keyword use in Content:
The use of queried terms (keyword phrases were users search for at search engines) in your articles is very important to do. Repeat the important keyword phrases related to your article as much as you can.
4. Accessibility of your Articles:
It is important that spiders can access your article. Accessibility can be compromised by using URL re-directs that search engine spiders cannot follow, hiding content behind select forms, javascript and other hard to spider forms of navigation. If the search engine spiders cannot find your content, they cannot rank it.
5. Links to Document from Site-Internal Pages:
This important search engine ranking factor is underrated by most web developers. Linking to internal pages from your website is important. Good ratios of keyword rich anchor texts with internal links is crucial for good rankings.
6. Primary Subject Matter of Site:
A website’s primary topic may influence how well it is able to rank pages on similar, corresponding or off topic subjects. If your website is particularly focused on one niche or another (from technology to videos to travel), articles hosted at your site on specific topics encompassed by the broader topic will have a better chance of ranking high. There are also many sites on topics like news or general information distribution (for example CNN.com) that encompass all or many subjects equally and may be able to rank documents for a wide variety of topics.
7. External Links to Linking Pages:
Almost every website is linking to another website from their content. These links may positively or negatively influence rankings based on the quality of the links, their relationship to the linking document and any existing relationships between the sites hosting the documents.
8. Link Popularity in Topical Community:
Topical communities are relevant and on-topic. These topical communities are measured by the search engines as groups of websites who interlink to each other frequently and carry a similar topic or theme. The links from topical communities carry great weight. A site that is included in a topical community by way of links from many other members may be considered more relevant and authoritative on the community’s subject matter.
9. Global Link Popularity of your Site:
Global link popularity measures the importance of all the links to your unique domain. Incoming links from more important sites (relative to their own link popularity) typically having a stronger influence.
10. Keyword Spamming:
Overusing keywords or certain keyword phrases in an attempt to appear relevant for those keywords / keyword phrases will negatively affect the rankings of your website.
