This is something I really hate about domains, they have to be renewed or I will loose them. I own around 50 domains and some of them are good, but I also have bad ones, even very bad ones. For the bad ones it is easy to decide, I will let these expire and drop. But for the names that are between good and bad, it is very hard to decide.
The renewal costs are not cheap. If I have to renew 10 names, it will cost me around $ 70 in total. I already renewed 3 domains, including my top hosting domain. Domains left to be renewed are 25. 20 of these names are .eu names. They will expire soon and I decided to keep 5 of them.
A smart thing to do when you are going to renew some domains is to check google (or another search engine) for coupons. For almost every well known domain registrar you can find coupons and you get a discount.

Don’t you get a discount for renewing…much less renewing a certain quantity of domains? Could vary by domain vendor, I suppose.

I think it is time for you to expand your web hosting business and become a registrar!

I don’t think renewal discounts are all that common, usually it’s the opposite: they bait you in with a cheap first year price and then jack up the price on renewals!
April 5th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Lol Steve, I checked it out by the way. But it is hard to do I think. You can become a reseller like registerfly :p
About the renewals. They are not cheaper than first registration price. Most of the time same prices, sometimes even more (with .info for example).

Thanks for the clarification, Jon. Something I have to look forward to in October…well, for most of them.
April 5th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
true that you have to make a choice on that. But those domains that have no resale value have to be disposed….tough choice!
April 5th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
btw, hw difficult is it becomming a registrar? i think it is a nice passive income too….you shud chk out the offer on ebay by RhServe, looks pretty intresting if you are interestd…
April 5th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
It is not difficult. I checked it before with a friend. But to get customers is hard. And if you become a reseller, than you make like 0,50 $ profit on 1 domain.
To become a real registrar, You have to invest 10,000 in the first place if you want to be assigned by ICANN. If i am right on this

It is pretty hard, since there are many other competitors out there. I agree with you Nomar. Sometimes I like afew of my names, but I just got to let go because the costs hurts!
April 5th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Nomar mind if i ask what you’re doing with all those domains? It’s bugging me that i’ve got about 10 or so, and about half of them are just kinda sitting there.
Domaining admittingly isn’t one of my strong points but i’m getting to the point that i need to learn.
April 5th, 2007 at 10:35 pm
Yeah, I have to much, I agree.. regged some domain names with to much enthusiasm.
I use around 10 domains for websites at this moment though. And planning to create more
April 6th, 2007 at 2:12 am
guys, subdomains of a good domain, has the same value! just look at the wikipedia example, or the free hostings, or about.com, and many others.
April 6th, 2007 at 5:27 am
Nomar please make an Icon for you blog it is blank now…
April 6th, 2007 at 5:55 am
Do you link icons ajith?
April 6th, 2007 at 6:22 am
I’m definitely going to hate renewing my domains
It’s ok though, I can’t wait until I actually start selling them
April 6th, 2007 at 10:51 am
Developed websites can do wonders as well.
They earn more than names you sell, unless of course you are selling true generic names. Personally, I’m sitting on a country name Dot com as welll.

Aha, I see.. Not a killer though , but a nice one
April 6th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I’m sitting on quite a few that aren’t THAT good but I refuse to let go. I hope to develop something on them one day to earn back those renewal fees!
April 6th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
hmm, is ther not a way to monetize those sites with parking or sumthing? i read so @ sedo….if its a good auto unique generator, this shud make you some money…
April 6th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
Hmm.. I cannot change DNS of 50 % of those domains, that sucks big time, others are parked though
April 8th, 2007 at 12:21 am
lyndonmaxewell,
That’s an intense country name
Never heard of it..Maybe someday the population will shoot up and you’ll be able to sell the name for big bucks because of publicity!
April 13th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
or maybe bush will accuse them of trying to create WMD…then you can sell that domain for a ransom!
just kidding….

I hate this as well, the most annoying part is the damn ‘you have 9 days’ , 8 days, 7, 6,5,4,3,2,1 e-mails. I know it is expiring. I wish domain sellers would stop sending me those emails.
For what it’s worth, I am probably going to let LoanViewFinder.com expire if anyone wants to pick that up in about a week.

Aha, thanks for mentioning apex
