Good search engine rankings are important to get more visitors to your site. Now the question I received in my email a few days ago: Is it important to be listed on the first result page or is it enough to be listed in the top 30 results? About this interesting question a case study was released last year.
This case study reveales that 62% of the current search engine user community is clicking on a search result at the first page of results, and 90% of the total search engine user community clicks on a result at the first three pages of search results. A first page result is important. If you are in the top 30 results, don’t stop building links and creating good content, but go for the first page!

The study confirms the importance of being listed on the first result page. If your web site is not listed on the first result page, changes are that web surfers won’t see your site. Many webmasters still believe that they can get top 10 rankings just by submitting their websites to search engines. This might have been true several years ago but now you have to do a little bit more to get high rankings.

The importance of ranking #1-3 is pretty incredible as well. I don’t remember the percentages off the top of my head but the drop off as you went from #s 1-10 was startling.

it’s basically a must to be on the first page if you want to see any kind of traffic to your site. How come your side bar is all messed up when I view it in internet explorer? the letters are all bold and don’t look very good.

Every single one of my google hits are from keywords and strings to which I’m on the first page. If my site is on the 2nd or 3d (or more) page I have yet to get a click.
Its crucial almost

I was number 2 for ‘cheating windows’, but now it looks like that page is not even indexed anymore. Any reason why that would happen?

What’s a good website to check your rankings for keywords/phrases? I don’t know where/how to check! Thanks.

Where are you getting those stats from? I’m not doubting you, just wondering where this magic 62% is coming from.

Ranking on page 1 on Google for a highly competitive and popular search term can drive tons of free traffic to a site. I’ve seen it for a lot of the sites I work on, and nothing can be better than a top 5 position
