If you’re looking for an immense web directory that you can apply to where it won’t cost you a penny for the top spot, then today is your day. DMOZ is one of the oldest and most respected web directories in existence and unlike Yahoo’s directory it is completely free to apply to, and it is free if you are accepted. In fact there are no payment options so if you’re accepted then you will be ranked on the quality of your site rather than your competitors cannot one-up you by opening up their wallet.
To apply simply take a trip over to DMOZ and either search for a similar site or use the category to find a location where you want your site to be present. Placement in the DMOZ directory is most valuable if you’re looking for unique traffic or for a sale. Sites listed in DMOZ are often considered superior to non-listed sites regardless of their other stats. If you plan to apply you should be sure to have been accepted to other high-quality directories so that you know your site has a good chance, and be through in the application, unlike other directories DMOZ has a culture which takes pride in only accepting the very best. That means no sites under-construction nor constant applications’ until you’re accepted. You could in theory have an advantage by attempting to become an editor first, but such is looked down upon and could get you blocked form the directory in the future.
If you haven’t already applied and been accepted to a few free directories then pick of few directories of my directory network and see how your site does.

Nomar, most of the SEO advice I’ve read on this site has been years old and stale if not out dated. DMOZ is not anywhere near as powerful as it used to be and getting listed in it doesn’t really increase your site’s standing in any way.

If you want to get listed in Dmoz, you have to pay to your category editor, otherwise, you won’t be listed unless you are lucky.
The best and logical way to gain high search engine rankings is to set up a viral campaign (link-bait) and you will see the benefit.
btw, Google has completed the PR update, today.

I think that directories are losing from their “linkage-value” more and more as time goes by, but as you said - DMOZ is still one of these bonuses that a buyer looks at when your site is up for grabs. Nice post.
Cheers

I Agree With Rajab saying that “If you want to get listed in Dmoz, you have to pay to your category editor, otherwise, you won’t be listed unless you are lucky.” i have seens thousands of sites which have more than of PR 4 and not listed in dmoz.
