For a long time, most bloggers and companies have viewed getting their stuff onto Digg as an absolutely fantastic thing (assuming the traffic load didn’t crash their sites).  Now, although the introduction of something called the DiggBar created a stir, it appears Digg is still on the side of little guys.

The DiggBar is, as you probably guessed, a Digg toolbar.  It lets people Digg stories and can create a shortened Digg URL so that it’s more convenient to share them.  And it doesn’t - this is the key part - steal any of the credit in the eyes of search engines.

John Quinn wrote on the official Digg blog, “We took several steps to ensure that search engines continue to count the original source, versus registering the DiggBar as new content. . . .  We always represent the source URL as the preferred version of the URL to search engines and use the meta noindex tag to keep DiggBar pages out of search indexes.”

So there’s no need to worry about getting your search engine rankings screwed up as a result of the new DiggBar.  If anything, as it makes the promotion of material simpler, your rankings should rise.  You might want to encourage the DiggBar’s adoption.

Quinn also wrote, “As always, we continue to monitor ideas and suggestions, so please send them our way.”
